La Tomatina (The tomato´s battle)

What would you say if someone throws a tomato at you? And what would you say if thousands of people throws tomatoes at you and to each other? What about you throwing tomatoes all around? Well, if your answer to this question is not a laugh this article is not for you.

If you did not figure it out by now this article is about the "tomatina", which is hard to translate to English but mostly means tomatoes all around. This old tradition started not as a tradition in 1945 at Buñol, a town close to Valencia. A few youngsters started a battle, and they decided to use tomatoes to throw at each other instead of rocks, smart decision, and after they had more fun than rage the people of Buñol decided to do it year after year, and did not miss a single year since then.

August 30th is the date of this year's Tomatina but the tomatina day is not just the fight. The activities start early in the morning. The city of Buñol gives away pastries to everyone that comes to the town main square really early at 9 in the morning. People start coming, eating and trying to get a ham. Yes a ham. The city places a full ham on top a soaped pole to see if someone is able to reach it. While eating the first pastries of the day, people enjoy watching how one after another try to go up that pole and fail miserably.

And then 11 o´clock comes around, and then a gunshot is fired to the sky indicating the start of the battle of tomatoes. A single truck full of tomatoes makes his way into the city main square and the ones on the truck are the first ones to throw the first tomatoes from the top of the truck. Once the tucks are in the middle of the square it dumps the thousands of tomatoes that was carrying and people start collection their munition and start the battle.

In a few minutes the whole square turns red, not from blood, but from destroyed tomatoes. A few more trucks keep coming into the square and provide tomatoes to everyone that wants to stay in the battle. After a while, and when all the trucks have completed their mission, a second gunshot is fired. This second gunshot means that the battle is over. Time to get clean, and for that, the city provides hoes that spray everyone that wants to which cold and clean water to get cleaned out.

Sounds like a good party right? Buñol is probably not the most known city in Spain, other than for this tradition, but if we tell you that is close to Valencia probably that sounds more familiar.
