5 things you should see in Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. It is located on an archipelago of islands and peninsulas, so for this reason it is called the “Venice of the North”, like other cities such as St Petersburg, Amsterdam or Copenhaguen. If you choose the Swedish city as a destination for your holidays, take note of these things that you cannot miss.
Gamla Stan
Gamla Stan is Stockholm old town. This island was the first settlement and from here, the city began to grow. This is an area of cobbled streets and classic and colorful buildings. Just stroll through its streets will transport you to another age.
We recommed you a drink in one of the terraces of Stortorget, the oldest square and heart of Stockholm. Visit the St Nicholas Cathedral, the oldest church in the city, or discover the Swedish royal tradition by visiting the Royal Palace.
Vasa Museum
There is only one ship in the world built in the 17th century that has lasted almost entirely to this days: the Vasa. 98% of its structure is original and the curious thing is that the ship, built for war, with its crew and cannons, sank shortly after setting sail from port. In the 50s the wreck was located and some later returned to the surface.
Today the ship is exhibited in the museum, located on the island of Djurgården, which was built for that purpose alone. It is one of the most visited museums in the world and you should visit it on your visit to Stockholm.
Skansen
If you want to know the tradition and Swedish rural life, you have to visit the open air museum Skansen, located in Djurgården, very close to the Vasa Museum. In this museum founded in 1891, you will discover how was the rural life in Sweden, in addition, you could taste the cuisine or buy local crafts. You can also see, both domestic and wild native animals.
Södermalm
If you want to discover the most modern Stockholm, expend one day to visit Södermalm and SoFo area, the Scandinavian equivalent of SoHo’s of London or New York. It is located on the island south of Gamla Stan. A neighborhood formerly occupied by the working class today has become one of the benchmarks in design, fashion, art and cuisine.
If you like photography, you should visit Fotografiska, a museum of photography and about photography where you also can enjoy concerts, its cafe or its courses and workshops.
ABBA museum
Whatever your musical style, at the ABBA museum you will surprise and enjoy. This museum is dedicated to the Swedish pop band during the 70s was one of the most famous in the world and even today still has a legion of followers.
In this museum you will find memories of the band, their suits and gold records, but also live an experience in the first person as if you were the fifth member of ABBA.
In addition to these five proposals, Stockholm is a city with many things to see and do. We recommend that you plan your trip in advance so you do not miss anything.
