The best destinations in Europe to travel in 2022

The European Best Destinations portal has organized, as every year, the Best in Europe vote, to find the best destinations in Europe. This is the thirteenth edition and the winner has been Ljubljana (Capital of Slovenia). The only Spanish representative, Marbella, has been in second place.

Here is the list of the best destinations.

10. ISTANBUL (TURKEY)

Istanbul got a total of 20667 votes placing it in 10th place. It is a cosmopolitan city, where the Mosques, churches and synagogues rise a few meters on the same street showing the diversity that this city houses.

In this Turkish city, people eat at street stalls and dine on rooftops overlooking the Bosphorus, listen to the strains of baglamas in tea houses and dance to electronic music in nightclubs.

Be sure to visit the Galata Tower, Haggia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Kadicoy Quarter and the Grand Bazaar.

9. LAHTI (FINLAND)

Lahti is the capital of the Päijänne Tavastia region and is located on the shores of Lake Vesijärvi, making it the gateway to the Finnish Lake District.

Awarded European Green Capital 2021, Lahti stands out for its efforts to fight climate change, pioneering sustainable solutions. Thus, many of its old industrial buildings have been converted into museums, development centers, hotels and restaurants.

8. NIJIMEG (NETHERLANDS)

The city of Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, looks a deserved eighth place thanks to its 31,030 votes.

Considered the oldest city in the Netherlands, Nijmegen (in Dutch, Nijmegen) was named European Green Capital in 2018 and boasts a rich cultural history that coexists with numerous leisure options, events and festivals.

7. LONDON (ENGLAND)

The British capital is in seventh place with 38,116 votes. Whether for its museums, for its emblematic buildings, for its urban parks or for discovering its novelties, London is always a good option for a getaway. The capital of the United Kingdom is a cosmopolitan city where you can travel again and again and come back surprised. It is also the perfect place for lovers of 'shopping', from its famous markets to the most exclusive stores.

6. ORADEA (ROMANIA)

Located in the west of Romania, Oradea is the sixth best destination in Europe with a total of 47,883 votes. Among many other things, Oradea stands out for its unique architectural heritage, which earned it the title of the most beautiful 'art nouveau' city in Europe. It was also voted the most beautiful city in Romania and in it we cannot miss visiting: the baroque cathedral, the castle, the Ady Endre Museum, the Orthodox church "with Moon" (Biserica cu Lună) and the state theater.

5. LEUVEN (BELGIUM)

Leuven has received 47,947 votes, which puts it in a deserved fifth place. It is a picturesque city in the heart of Belgium, an ideal destination for a year-round city break with friends, family or even alone. Thanks to its rich and varied heritage, artistic, cultural, scientific, beer, gastronomic and commercial offer, this town invites you to stroll and discover.

Leuven is located at the confluence of the Dijle and Voer rivers and is the capital of the Flemish Brabant province in the Flanders region. Everything is within walking distance and it is best to discover it wandering from here to there.

4. PLOVDIV (BULGARIA)

Located in the lowlands of Thrace, on the banks of the Maritsa River, the city has just been crowned the fourth best destination in Europe with 51,024 votes.

Plovdiv is the city where ancient history, culture and heritage are in harmony. Ancient and timeless, artistic and modern, cosmopolitan and romantic, this city is captivating and full of life.

The city is home to impressive monuments of antiquity: the theater from the 1st century, the Roman Stadium from the 2nd century, the Forum, Roman mosaics, paintings in the Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis (4th-6th centuries) and in the Little Early Christian Basilica (15th centuries). IV-VI), among others.

3.AMIENS (FRANCE)

Amiens reaches third place on the podium with its 58,114 votes.

Jules Verne settled in Aimiens in 1871, making it one of his sources of inspiration. You can tour the city on foot or by boat through its beautiful canals. The picturesque Saint-Leu district has many cafes and terraces with views of the imposing cathedral.

Aimiens is also home to a curious International Garden Festival that takes place in Hortillonnages, voted the most beautiful urban park in Europe.

2. MARBELLA (SPAIN)

The capital of the sun in Europe, Marbella is the preferred destination for travelers seeking relaxation, shopping, hotels and refined restaurants, but also local crafts, golf, outdoor activities and sports.

The only Spanish one is in second place in the list of the Best European Destinations. And it is that Marbella attracts for its good weather all year round, golf courses and other outdoor sports, hotels and restaurants of level or shopping. Puerto Banús and the alleys with thousands of flowers in its historic center also make this Malaga destination one of the favorites for travellers.
