What can I take to Australia?

Spring will be starting in Australia and the Australian airports will begin receiving many tourists. However, before you prepare your suitcase and hand luggage, you should know that besides the international constraints, there are specific restrictions from the Australian Government.

Prohibited items or require special authorization

  • Weapons: any weapon, whether or not firearms, and ammunition must be declared. In some cases a special permit is required.
  • Medicines for performance and image enhancement: includes anabolic steroids, growth hormones and steroids.
  • Sensitive Material: Digital material publications or any sensitive material.
  • Medicines: medicines that can cause dependence (opiate or narcotic substances based on other analgesics), traditional medicines, prescription medicines or veterinary drugs may be prohibited or require special authorization. You will not need to declare aspirin, paracetamol and other medicines without prescription in Australia.
  • Food, plants and animals: all fresh food, plants, animals and related equipment must be declared.
  • Protection of wildlife: any element associated with wildlife (hunting trophies, coral products, ebony, traditional medicine) should be declared.
  • Collectables: you may need special authorization to carry artwork, stamps, coins, archaeological objects, minerals, etc.

Anything else?

If before your trip to Australia you have visited a country where you may have been infected with yellow fever (The department of Health) you must take with you a certificate of vaccination.

And finally, any counterfeit or pirated items may be confiscated and you may be fined for possessing it.
