About the Dominican Peso

The Dominican Peso is the official currency of the Dominican Republic. Its symbol is RD$ and its ISO 4217 code is DOP. The Dominican Constitution of 2010 unified the national currency in this currency.

History of the currency of the Dominican Republic

The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic was created on October 9th, 1947, although it would not begin its activity until October 23rd, 1947. Since its creation, this entity that works in a decentralized and autonomous manner is the only organization authorized to issue banknotes and coins in the country.

In its more than 70 years of life, it has evolved and created new series of banknotes, adapting to technological advances and improving coin security measures. To date, a total of six families of banknotes have been launched, of which three are currently in circulation simultaneously.

Dominican Peso banknotes and coins

Dominican Peso notes are 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000. There are several families of banknotes in circulation: the 4th Family, which was issued in 1977, presented great advances in relation to the previous series and security measures were increased. The design of the DOP would be modified in the following issue: the 5th family, in which new drawings, legends and other characteristics were introduced, such as, for example, a new denomination of RD$ 2000 (Two Thousand Pesos Gold) that commemorated the change of millennium. In addition, in 2011 the national currency unit changed its name from "Pesos Gold" to "Dominican Pesos". Finally, the most recent series in circulation is the 6th family, in which changes were introduced in the banknote designs with the aim of modernizing the image and adding the Rose of Bayahibe flower as a national symbol. The first notes of the denominations RD$ 2000, RD$ 1000, RD$ 500, RD$ 200, RD$ 100 and RD$ 50 were put into circulation on October 1st, 2014 as part of the activities commemorating the LXVII anniversary of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic.

On the other hand, the BCRD has issued some commemorative notes throughout its history, such as the RD$ 500 note commemorating the V Centennial of the Discovery and Evangelization of America. This note was designed by Dominicans and is considered to belong to the 4th family. Another commemorative note is the one issued in 2017 as a tribute to the 70th Anniversary of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic. One of the main changes presented by this banknote was the new isotype of the entity that represents the tower of the institution.

The denominations of the Dominican Pesos coins are 1, 5, 10 and 25 and on them you can see the figures of the Fathers of the Nation and Founders of the Dominican Republic.
