The Swedish Krone is the official currency of Sweden. Its ISO 4217 code is SEK and its symbol is kr. Each Krone is divided into 100 öre (Ören plural) but the smallest currency unit currently is 1 Crown.
History of the currency of Sweden
In 1873 as a result of a monetary union between Sweden, Norway and Denmark, these three countries acquired the Krone as its currency. In Suecia, the Krone replaced the previous existing currency that was the riksdaler riksmynt. When this union was dissolved with the outbreak of the First World War, the three countries decided to continue calling their coins by the same name. For this reason we have the Swedish Krone, the Norwegian krone and the Danish Krone.
Swedish Krone banknotes and coins
The notes in circulation of the Swedish Krone are 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Krone. In this series are represented different relevant characters of the Swedish culture: the children's book writer Astrid Lindgren (author of Pippi Longstocking among others) on the note of 20, the poet and composer Evert Taube in the 50 one, the actress Greta Garbo in the 100 note, the film director Ingmar Bergman in the 200 note, the singer Birgit Nilsson in the 500 one and the UN General-Secretary and member of the Swedish Academy Dag Hammarskjöld in the note of 1,000 Swedish Krone. In the reverse, images of landscapes relating to the characters of the notes appear, such as the places where they grew up or that inspired them.
In addition to these banknotes, there is also a commemorative note of 100 Swedish Krone in circulation. It is a note issued in 2005 where Mother Sweden appears on the obverse and, on the back, you can see images referring to the Tumba Bruk papermill and printing factory where the first Swedish Krone banknotes were made and printed in 1755.
BANKNOTES OF SWEDISH KRONE IN CIRCULATION
The Swedish Krone coins are 1, 2, 5 and 10 Krone. On the obverse of the coins appears the image of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden or its emblem. On the reverse appear the denominations and three crowns representing the coat of arms.
